Jules Audemars Chronometer with Audemars Piguet Escapement - PT and PG side by side

Feb 01, 2015,04:28 AM

I happened to stop by the Audemars Piguet boutique the other day and found those marvelous models sitting side by side.  Felt compelled to take the pic of the pair and do some comparison.

As you may know, this model was inspired by 19th century pocket watches, and represents the ultimate timelessly classical watch.
Caliber highlight is AP escapement and 12 beats=43,200 vph.  You can hear the ticking sound from your wrist and it may be disturbing in the library, but to your ears, maybe soothing smile

Inspired by the 19th century pocket watches - the case size is big, 46mm, but I could wear THIS - so nice.

Let's refresh our memory on some of the specifications:
- Hand-wound manufacture Calibre 2908
- Chronometer with AP escapement, power reserve indication, hours, minutes, small seconds
- Glareproofed sapphire crystal and case back
- Water resistant to 20m
- 26153PT: White enamel dial, white gold small seconds counter, black printed Roman numerals, blued hands.
- 26153OR: Black enamel dial, black lacquered gold small seconds counter, white printed numerals, pink gold hands.
- Hand-stitched "large square scale" alligator strap with AP folding clasp.
- Case diameter 46mm, case thickness 12.7mm
- Movement diameter 39.80mm (17 3/4 lignes)
- Movement thickness 8.11mm
- Number of stones: 33
- Number of parts: 267
- Power reserve: 90 hours
- Frequency of the balance wheel: 43,200 vph
- Balance type: With variable inertia screws
- Balance-spring type: Double
- COSC Certified
- Lubrication free direct impulse escapement
- Twin barrels in parallel........

Okay, here we go for the pics!

26153PT.OO.D028CR.01
Case: 950 PT
Dial: White enamel
Strap: Blue

See the engine turned white gold main plate?  This is for PT model only.

White enamel dial - so nice.... very good balance.

Back of the main plate is also decorated.....

46mm, but didn't feel "pain" of the size smile

Can be hidden under the sleeve.

Thick, but not too thick....

Well, maybe a bit too thick... smile

Now, the other one:
26153OR.OO.D088CR.01
18K Pink Gold Case
Dial: Black Enamel
Strap: Brown

The main plate is a bit "flat"....

Can't complain about the black enamel dial....

Power reserve meter.

Back side is also plain..... but PG gears are beautiful....

Yeah, not bad, is it?

It is tough to pick one.  But my taste always goes to the white metal, so I would pick PT one.....

What do you guys think?

Ken

Interesting concept, and it is a great idea to have taken these wristshots...

To show the thickness of the case, wihch I find too important for my taste. But what a concept! Thanks for the report, Ken. Nicolas

I enjoy comparing things, my friend....

.. and it is my habit to show how it would look on the wrist with the thickness taken into account as well :-) Ken

Definitely PT for me. Do you know Giulio Papi's answer to the question?

Pink gold! I happened to ask him the very question when I visited his workshop in 2013. The reason? The decorated plates used on the movement in the platinum model are extremely laborious! Truth be told, both are stunning, and different, on the wrist.

Wow, interesting!

... but, yes, they are both stunning. But PT is after all, 1.8 times expensive than PG :-) Ken

Thanks for the comparison Ken. Definitely the platinum ChronAP for me

I instantly fell in love with it when I first saw it at SIHH many years ago. Hopefully I can buy one someday in the future as it's on my list! Cheers, Anthony

Yeah, I wish, too!

... for now, they are both way out of my league! Ken

Great piece.

While I usually prefer PG/RG I agree that this watch look better in PT. JerryW

Although I agree that the mainplate decoration on teh PT is very nice, I think the RG is really spectacular! The play between white, red and silver really do it for me... Thanks for posting these beauties, they're really my all time favorites of AP's more...
