Cameleon in Rome... after many years of waiting!

Oct 19, 2014,08:25 AM

So...

 When in Rome...?

One thing one notices while in Rome is the color of buildings.. Terra cotta... reds, ochres... or shades of pink to salmon color.

I had the 'salmon' bug for a long time now... and after sounding out some interest to friends and some watchmakers in Barcelona... I finally get the call.

As you know from my past posts, I'm not too much of a purist 'purist' and I'm open to fiddling with a watch if need be. Case in point. I LOVE the 5402. I've handled the
jubilee and first and second gen 15202 Jumbos. They're solid, beautiful, and the caseback amazing.
But, I like the slimness and design fo the original 5402...

I have a 5402 C series... and will not let it go!

So.. my dilemma? I want an Salmon dial RO!!!

a very nice watchmaker in Barcelona who I contacted months and months ago was able to source a NOS dial for me, after an email, a call, and a quick flight back home for the placing of the dial ... I return to Rome with...simply amazing results!!!

And now... I see that this is truly a Roman Cameleon!!

Here in Rome the hues of Salmon to pink to red, to ochre, to orange are mesmerizing... and against the backdrop of this first generation Jubilee AP RO ST.14802.0.944 dial... mamma mia, its amazing!

The luminosity of this dial has to be experienced in person to be understood... nothing compares to this!!!

Sorry for the bad quality photos, but you get the idea!

So now.. I have the option of wearing this with the Original AP at 6 o'clock, a white 15002, and now a Salmon 14802 dial... maybe a choice for every season??!

I hope you all had a good weekend!
Thanks for sharing the joy!

Here's the first street shot waking up in the morning....

Some direct light...

Salmon colored tile to see how the cameleon changes!

A salmon wall ... everywhere in Rome!

How about a salmon/champagne colored building to compare?

Definitely against the place mat at a local cafe! Dio... this cafe crema is absolutely amazing today!

Maybe this building is closer to the salmon shade of the 14802 dial!???

In person.. this looked close, but no cigar!

And for reference... this is the incarnation of the original AP RO that I left behind.. and which is now safely
sleeping in the safe!

I must confess. it is a magical dial..

But the salmon dial is STUNNING!!! Gives the AP RO a whole different charisma!!

HAGWE,
S

How well you capture and describe it. Definitely a whole new look for the Royal Oak. I would love a re-issue of some salmon dials by AP. Could not be happier for you! Oh, and welcome back to the Masthead my Friend :-)

Thanks !!!

Yes... its very very nice. The play of color on the dial, and luminosity is terrific. I guess its just a bit below the nice silver/white dial on the prev. generation 15202... which I really like!! the salmon/champagne color is so late 80s IMO but I love i...

My friend, huge congratulations! This dial is sublime, and to say all...

In my opinion, just the next best thing after the 5402. This dial gives another dimension to the Watch. More " cool ", less sporty. More chic. That is a Watch I would love to have in my collection! BRAVO! Best, Nicolas.

Muchas gracias!

of the salmon dial AP RO. If you don't mind, can you share a bit more about why the Salmon dial is so special ? I've seen the blue dial very often but not this salmon dial. Thanks again !

Thanks for asking!!

Chuck Thanks for asking!!! Here's my biased opinion, not so much information ;) The Salmon dial appeared in three different iterations of the Royal Oak: Not sure which came first chronologically, but I know that it came out on the 36mm version in the late...
