As we look forward to a new racing watch, let's remember the one that started it all...

The Juan Pablo Montoya.

If memory serves, this watch was released in 2004.  For those who might not recall, most reaction was less than flattering:

"Ugly!"

"AP has lost it!"

etc., etc.

Well, my Friends, the reality is that this creation deserves much credit for launching the "LE Offshore" craze, at least as it pertains to F1 themed models.

The watch featured a rather radical dial, bezel, pushers and crown, plots, and certainly the strap.  The details added up to awesome for me, and I bought the watch.  AP's use of carbon fiber was different than other brands, (hmm, when would we see that again??), and under a slightly glossy finish, the material offered a very three dimensional look.

It was also the first Offshore to feature an exhibition back, somewhat contrary to the "soft iron core" casing that was common to other models.  The rotor had special detailing, now so common on many auto-themed models.

Very comfortable and light, the watch was offered in a titanium case, red gold, and platinum (another theme we would see repeated on future editions with Offshore LEs), all with the carbon bezel and crown guards.

For a while this audacious nugget was traded around.  But after the dust settled, many discovered how special this piece was and it made a permanent addition for many AP enthusiasts.  Without question, the design of this watch would serve as a basis for the next F1 driver-themed watch, the Rubens Barrichello.  More recently, we saw the lines pushed even further with the carbon Grand Prix, and now we await the Michael Schumacher.

Please, share with me your thoughts on the JPM....

Forget the AP, I'd rather have the 1911! ;) -MW

Even the 911 will become tedious....

When everyone stares at you as they pull up next to at traffic lights and tries to race you, and then min. 1k depreciation per month. Lots of people new on this forum mention depreciation before buying, it's nothing compared to a car. Compare that with th...

LOL. I put 100 rounds through my TRP yesterday

There is something so awesome about shooting a good 1911.

Good and Bad

The bad being the comfort did not work out for you. The good being this design appealed to you enough to want to buy it, Bravo I say.

Personally I have always appreciated it....

And it is a super cool piece! One of my favorites behind the RB2 Ti. Cheers,

Now, of course, we have some new options

With regular straps and a tang buckle. Still, that JPM strap was only made for the clasp, and that is a special detail. It is easy to wear a Diver or Survivor strap on the Trulli or similar cased Offshore and it still looks great. It would be interesting ...

Agreed. And most do seem to prefer the RB2...

But we can all agree this JPM was the springboard for those other models.

to the beginning, before we will see the "latest one" - soon. Thanks! By the way, the watch box in your pictures. Somehow it looks familiar to me. Does it come from Berlin - H? Oliver

Nothing gets past your eyes Oliver...

but in this case I know the project very well. It just happened in my rear building - long time ago :-) Unfortunately I donĀ“t have one. Big mistake! Oliver

Probably my rarest piece... one of 25...

And I have never thought about parting with it. Ironically, a dear friend has the same box and lost his keys. Luckily the box came with 2, so I sent him my spare (the locks were all the same but require a specially shaped key). Better not lose mine now!

Nice case...

Love attaches and cases. This one is particularly nice and fitting for the precious contents inside.

Thanks Patrick.

It was purchased very early into my days as an enthusiast (maybe 2001 I would guess). I will bring forth a small report at some point. It is a great case.

was my first AP

had it for 2 years then sold it to get the RBII

A natural progression

Many continue to hail the RB2 as the most appealing Offshore chrono to date.

JPM was my first AP!..

For me basically a luv at first sight with JPM RG upon their release--8yrs now.. Definitely a keeper! Bought the Ti too, passed it on to my bro, he's still loving it--second only to his RB2 RG. LE felt so much more LE then--the hunt, the fun, the possessi...

Terrific. Aside from all the obvious "firsts" employed on this watch...

The dial remains super special in my eyes. It just has such a solid feel about it. Thanks for your reply and insight!
