How far are you from Levi?
I may be going to Levi in February and I was wondering if I will see the Northern lights at this time of the year?

in the night i.e. in front of my wood storage. But it's getting then much below the daytime temperature. This was taken when it was below minus 30 in the middle of the night. Best, Kari...

A normal bright winter night 250 km north of the Polar Circle.

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-04:25
But this is a lovely country. More reindeer than people. Best, Kari

I am so going over there in the near future

 By: Arie - Mr Orange : December 27th, 2015-04:30
Really want to see a sky like this with my own eyes!

That's nothing special...

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-04:47
A night train takes from Helsinki to the Polar Circle. The cabins have own bathroom and the restaurant car offers good food and big verity of drinks. There are special car carrying wagons. In the morning when arriving the Polar Circle, just drive the car ...

The great thing in the life is

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-06:16
that we who live in cold countries can easily visit the warmer part of the world and vice versa. Best, Kari

Simply spectacular!

 By: KMII : December 27th, 2015-04:36
Now that is a really first rate picture And come on, if your wife does wrist shots in such a temperature, surely you can, too?

She's having fur coats, I don't.

Furthermore, I packet in a hurry and took just summer jeans forgetting the warm underwear home. Wearing tennis shoes and thin jeans feels very "refreshing". Best, Kari

Absolutely breath-taking!!!

Thank you Kari, I wish you and your loved ones to enjoy these highly emotional phenomenon in full happiness. Ciao, Elio

That's how my backyard looked today at noon...

I wanted to do the aurora's this year, heard that the solar activity has been greater than usual...but just understood what means to have 2 new babies at home... maybe next year; I was going to desist but the way you describe it seems doable even for me! ...

I guess it was 1/60 sec and f. 1.7

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-06:02
There's no special solar activity just now. Just bright nights and mostly the Aurora is there. Some two months ago there was very strong solar activity. I called to my friend living here and asked how's the night sky. He answered: "Do you think I have not...

Wonderful...

Together with your second picture you posted below, this one shows how beautiful and exotic are some places on earth. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Mark

Isn't it amazing

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-22:41
that watches like Patek find their way to places like this? Best, Kari

I absolutely love this

 By: Bruno.M1 : December 27th, 2015-06:59
on my bucket list, must see this one day !!!!!!!!

You are not so far away so it's an easy piece of cake.

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-07:39
Just a flight to Helsinki and from Helsinki 1 h 30 mins with Finnair's A321 to Ivalo. Very often Aurora is visible already from the windows of the plane. Best, Kari

Wow! It's hard to believe

 By: cazalea : December 27th, 2015-09:04
When here, the hummingbirds are fighting in the bougainvillea flowers! Thanks for the photos. We\'ll have to come visit again in wintertime. Mike & Laurie in San Diego ...

Yes, the diversity of the world is a wonderful thing.

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-22:40
And it's amazing that we all can become happy in so different environments. Anyhow, always welcome. Best, Kari

Levi is about 200 km

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-12:33
southwest from here. I would guess that Levi is 80-100 km north from the Polar Circle meaning that Northern Lights are very common there. There's some great night life in Levi so be careful... Best, Kari

Photoshopped picture. The colors are just unbelievable ! Enjoy and keep warm. Cheers Gordon

If the colours would be Photoshopped

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-13:54
there would be red, yellow, blue on top of green. The Aurora pictured is something very simple and common - far away of being spectacular. I do not go out very often to watch the sky. I rather watch tv... Best, Kari

A compliment

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-22:34
from a great photographer. Thank you! Kari

Simply stunning.

 By: TheMadDruid : December 27th, 2015-19:07
Were these taken with you Q? The colors of the first one are beyond words.

I took pictures both with Q and the latest version of D-Lux

 By: dr.kol : December 27th, 2015-22:33
plus some with my M (type 240). If I remember correctly, Winston Churchill said something like "my taste is simple, I am happy with the best". When cameras are concerned, I'm happy with Leica. When watches are concerned, I am happy with Patek, when cars a...

Your simple taste is impressive.

 By: TheMadDruid : December 28th, 2015-08:26
Awaiting my Q, another week or so I am told.

You will be impressed.

 By: dr.kol : December 28th, 2015-11:17
That's indeed a nice camera. Best, Kari

Just an average night

Remember what I said about simple taste...

 By: dr.kol : December 29th, 2015-13:18
and the new year starts well. My 911 Targa GTS arrived and I'll go and pick it up next Monday. We have some snow and ice on the roads but luckily Targas are all AWD. Best Kari

Congratulation Kari,for the car

 By: beejo : December 29th, 2015-14:24
I think this is a very wise choice specially after the new turbo models. Bravo Kari for the simple taste. Best, Ahmed

Thanks Ahmed. And I am impressed

 By: dr.kol : December 30th, 2015-02:21
that you call Targa GTS "simple taste". I will send some photos next week. I have never seen such a model. Best Kari

I just meant that you are not after...

 By: beejo : December 30th, 2015-09:35
Flashy cars like ferraris, lamborghinis or even Aston you are after simpler more reliable pieces of engineering.. Best, Ahmed

Lambo, Ferrari and partly Aston

are jokes in our climate. First of all, the first two do not start when it's cold enough, the heating is not strong enough and the ice must be cleaned from inside the windscreen. Porsche is functioning perfectly here and the four wheel drive (I know, also...

Yes correct I have a 2009 targa 4s..

 By: beejo : December 30th, 2015-12:17
I would love to experience that...As we don't have winter over here Best, Ahmed

But you have sand storms...

 By: dr.kol : December 30th, 2015-12:28
Once I decided to drive the desert road from Alexandria to Cairo and there was a sand storm. It was as impressive as a snow storm... Best, Kari

What a shame ....

 By: beejo : December 30th, 2015-12:42
Your bad luck Kari,It happens like one day a year and specifically on that day you decided to take the Alex-Cairo road which we call the dessert road..... By the way there is a huge difference between both storms...Sand storm give me hard time breathing.....

Luckily I drove my agent's MB...

 By: dr.kol : December 30th, 2015-12:46
Normally I took the Delta Road but for some reason I wanted to drive fast. No, the storms are not the same. It's really slippery when it's snowing and snow does not sand blast the paint of the car. Best, Kari

But simple taste concerned only camera, watches and cars

 By: ch9698 : December 29th, 2015-22:34
For others, the 3 F rule is better

Surprisingly similar philosophy.

Love that line!

Cool shot, Kari,

 By: masterspiece : December 31st, 2015-10:06
and looks very cold. Brrrr! LOL The Aurora Borealis is a beautiful natural wonder to see. Patti and I look forward to seeing it. I hope these old bones of mine can take it. Aloha, Bob

In Lapland they

 By: dr.kol : December 31st, 2015-11:58
they fill up the body surrounding the bones with vodka. And it's not cold anymore. However, I have not heard if this medicine works to old Aloha-bones. Best, Kari
